How do I report purchased heat, steam, cooling or compressed air?

If you buy the energy from a third party, it goes in the Heat & Steam tab (Scope 2); if you burn the fuel yourself, it goes in the Combustion tab (Scope 1). Purchased heat, steam, cooling or compressed air go in 4. Scope 2 – Heat & Steam, in kWh, with their emission factor. Boilers, generators or ovens that burn fuel on your own premises go in 5. Scope 1 – Combustion.

In the Heat/steam supply scenario column, choose the one that matches your case:

  • Own generation without grid connection: you produce the heat yourself, on site, with no connection to any network. It is excluded from Scope 2 automatically, because the fuel you burn is already in the Scope 1 of the site.
  • Direct-line transfer from another facility/third party: the heat or steam reaches you through a dedicated line from another facility or a third party, not through a shared network.
  • Shared distribution network (district network): you are connected to a district heating or cooling network that supplies several customers.
  • Cogeneration (CHP) — contract with external supplier: your supplier produces heat and electricity together (combined heat and power) and sells you the heat.
  • By-product/residual from a neighboring industrial process: the heat is a by-product (waste heat) of a nearby industrial process that you receive.
  • Unknown / Not specified: you do not know how the heat is supplied, for example because your invoice does not say.

Which emission factor is used? The one you enter in Emission factor (kgCO₂e/kWh). In Source of emission factor, say where it comes from:

  • Supplier-specific factor — requested directly from the supplying company (default case): your supplier gives you its own emission factor for the heat it sells you. It is the usual case and the most accurate one, so ask your supplier for it.
  • Thermal contract/PPA with specified generator: your contract names the plant that produces your heat, and you use the factor of that generator.
  • “Green Heat” certificate / specific renewable attribute: you hold a certificate or attribute that proves the heat is renewable, and you use the factor linked to it.
  • Estimated from fuel declared by the supplier + generation efficiency: your supplier tells you which fuel it uses but not the factor, so you estimate the factor from that fuel and the efficiency of the generation.
  • Unknown / not available: you have no information about the factor. [Pendiente: confirmar qué factor se aplica en este caso.]

Steps

  1. Go to the 4. Scope 2 – Heat & Steam tab and select the Type of energy acquired: Heat, Steam, Cooling or Compressed air.
  2. Select the scenario that matches your case.
  3. Enter the purchased energy (kWh), the Emission factor (kgCO₂e/kWh) and its Source of emission factor.

Good to know

  • Ask your supplier for its factor and keep the document as evidence.
  • “Own generation without grid connection” is not counted in Scope 2, because it is already in the Scope 1 of the site.
